Create Your Website With A Series of 5 Easy Steps

by Darrel Hawes

You may be at the point where you want to begin your own website. If so, here’s a list of what you should do.

First, you need to buy a domain name. Before you purchase your domain name, it will benefit you greatly to be aware of the following guidelines in finding a domain name that will work for you.

Select a domain ending with a .com.

Easy to spell.

Not likely to be misunderstood by a listener.

Free of numeric characters and dashes.

Try to include alliteration or other elements to make it memorable.

Descriptive of what you are offering.

Of course, there are a couple of exceptions you should know. For example, if your site is a personal blog (whether business-oriented or not), then it is common practice to use your name even in those cases in which it is not easy to spell.

Another possible exception is the last criteria I listed. The best case is to have a domain name which is descriptive, but there are many sites where this is not the case. The best example is Google! (You would think a better name would have been “TheBestSearchEngine.com”.) Give some thought to your target audience and what makes sense to them.

Next, select a web host to host your web pages.

Third, set up your site. Your basic decision here is whether to go with a traditional “static” site or a blog. Blogging software is becoming incredibly popular and easier to use every day, and platforms such as Wordpress can be adapted for many different purposes.

Fourth, you will need to put content onto your website. If you go with a blog format, this step is incredibly simple.

The fifth step is to arrange a plan for promoting your website. After going to all the work of setting up your site, you want to make sure that as many people know about it as possible. How will you make this happen? Some possible methods include writing articles, making videos, writing press releases, posting on forums, and posting on blogs.

Having your own website might seem intimidating at first, but it is one of the most beneficial means at your disposal for promoting your business.
